It seems that the governments and the authorities have made it almost impossible for the torrent networks to survive. Some of the major players in the industry have been forced to shut down while others are leaving voluntarily.
In quite an expected move on Wednesday, ExtraTorrent announced that it is closing down permanently leaving a lot of loyal users heartbroken.
In recent months, a number of other torrent sites have also gone offline including TorrentHound, Torrentz.eu, KickassTorrents, and What.cd.
Users who are trying to access the website are met with a short message which says, “ExtraTorrent has shut down permanently.”
“ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline. We permanently erase all data. Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to all ET supporters and torrent community. ET was a place to be…”
ExtraTorrent was one of the last big names remaining in the industry and was founded eleven years back in 2006. It received millions of visitors on a daily basis and came only second to the torrent giant PirateBay when it came to both content and traffic.
There has been no confirmation whether it was the legal pressure from the entertainment industry which resulted in the shutdown of the website.
ExtraTorrent operator SaM confirmed while talking to TorrentFreak that it was the end for the website. “It’s time we say goodbye.”
