Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recently released its plans pertaining to the start of testing the 5G network in Pakistan. It circulated a handout to let the stakeholders know about its plans. 5G is the next thing in the network services as Pakistan already has 4G.

According to the news, right now the groundwork is being laid for the testing of the 5G network so that it can be rolled out at the end of the testing period. Even the mobile phone networks are being given an opportunity by PTA to apply for the 5G spectrum.

For the evolution of technology and to get a roadmap to the 5G spectrum, PTA is working with Qualcomm to achieve all the goals. Recently, a workshop was held in the city of Islamabad. It can easily be said that this partnership is going to bring fast and fruitful results as Qualcomm is one of the biggest technological companies around the globe.

Dr. Ismail Shah who is the chairman of PTA said, “The government would facilitate all existing as well as new companies to test 5G in Pakistan. The facilitation would be in the form of free test license and spectrum. Harmonized spectrum for 5G is [available] in the 3.5 GHz band. An EOI [Expression of Interest or invite for applications] would be floated at a suitable time to gauge interest in conducting a trial before the standard is finalized in the year 2020.”

If everything works out then Pakistan is going to be the first nation in the South Asia to launch the 5G technology, said Anusha Rehman who is the Minister for Information and Technology. The most notable fact would be that Pakistan will lie amongst the first countries who are launching the 5G network in the year 2020. It will be with countries like China, South Korea, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom in this move.

The next three years will be a chance for a number of countries to test the service before they can think of rolling it out in 2020. This thing should be kept in mind that Pakistan still needs to improve a lot when it comes to the 4G spectrum. The coming three years will be filled with improvements, lots of tests and runs and it is hoped that the network will be available by the said year.

Although AT&T claims that it already has the 5G evolution but it is simply an upgraded version of the 4G network. The company claims that it will be rolling out the network in 20 different cities as the year ends.

The 5th generation of mobile broadband technology is only possible because of the efforts of the entire technology industry with tech giants like Qualcomm, Intel, and ZTE making contribution alongside the governments of different countries.

It is anticipated that a lot of other countries will be joining the bandwagon too and 2020 will be the year when the world will see a revolution in the mobile broadband technology.
